PETRONAS Sprinta Racing rider confirms progress on opening night at Losail International Circuit.
Khalirul Idham Pawi made his official debut as a PETRONAS Sprinta Racing Moto2 rider today, the Malaysian finishing the opening free practice sessions of the Qatar Grand Prix in 23rd position after making gradual progress throughout.
The first session of the 2019 season saw the youngster stop the clock at 2’00.935 on his penultimate lap of 16, leaving him in 20th position but just 1.344 seconds off the top.
As night fell and the second session got underway beneath the floodlights of Losail, Pawi continued to rack up the laps and took almost nine tenths off his FP1 best, a 2’00.015 proving enough for 23rd position overnight.
Tomorrow’s FP3 will provide another opportunity to improve further, before a new MotoGP-style Q1 session that will get underway at 18:25h local time followed by Q2 at 18:50h.

“My objective today was to set a 1’59 but all the riders are close together in terms of the lap times and it is difficult, so we have quite a lot of work to do tomorrow in practice. If we want to qualify directly then we will have to be faster than today. The objective tomorrow is to improve the overall balance of the bike to be able to gradually increase my pace and in particular find more performance under braking. We will try to improve this and then I will give it my all in qualifying.”
