PETRONAS Sprinta Racing rider sets third fastest time on opening day of practice at Mugello.
PETRONAS Sprinta Racing’s Mattia Pasini enjoyed a strong start to the Italian GP by ending the first day of his home GP third fastest in the combined timesheets, after two positive practice sessions in which he showed great speed.
In FP1, Pasini set a 1min 52.863secs lap to go fastest with three minutes left of the session, this time equateding to the fifth-fastest time after the chequered flag. The PETRONAS Sprinta Racing rider continued in the same way during FP2. After a first stint in which he focused more thoroughly on the setup of his Kalex, Pasini clocked his best time of the day on his second run. That 1min 52.173secs time allowed him to top FP2 for a few minutes, and eventually placed him third overall.
Provisionally through to Q2, Pasini will have to confirm the spot tomorrow during FP3. Qualifying takes place at 3:10pm (Q1) and 3:35pm (Q2) local time for the Moto2 class.
#54 Mattia Pasini
“I came into my home GP with a little more experience of the bike thanks to the test in Barcelona, but this track is very different to all the others we have ridden at up until now. This morning we started with a different setup, but it didn’t work as we wanted, so we decided to go back to the base setup and work from there. We didn’t do badly in the morning, but in FP2 we made an improvement as we focused on working with a used tyre, with the end of the race in mind, and it was good but still not 100%. In the second part of the session we took another big step forward and the bike worked very well. In the end I finished third and, honestly, I don’t think we are far off. The most important thing will be to start on the first or second row of the grid, to get away from the chaos on the opening laps. We have to continue working this way because we are doing well, and we will see if tomorrow we can continue to make progress.”
