Steps forward for PETRONAS Sprinta Racing at Jerez

Ayumu Sasaki and John McPhee continue with Moto3 preparations, finishing 8th and 17th fastest respectively on the second day of three in Spain.

Strong winds made for a tricky day of testing for the Moto3 riders at Jerez, but PETRONAS Sprinta Racing riders Ayumu Sasaki and John McPhee banked another solid day of preseason as they made progress with set-up and tyre tests. Sasaki was particularly happy with the improvements he made, which reflected in his overall position on the timesheets (8th), whilst McPhee turned his attention to burning rubber and finished the day in 17th.

The improvements made by Sasaki and his crew were notable, the Japanese rider improving his feeling with the bike and further adapting his riding style to this track. Those factors combined to see Sasaki move into 8th position, the PETRONAS Sprinta Racing rider clocking a best effort of 1’46.953 out of his 37 laps.

His teammate McPhee spent the day trying out different tyre choices around the Jerez – Angel Nieto Circuit, gathering some valuable information that will help the Scotsman decide on his ideal combination. McPhee completed a total of 33 laps on the second day, logging a best time of 1’47.472 that was enough for 17th position on the day.

The final day of the official test at Jerez takes place tomorrow, before the action resumes in a week’s time in Qatar from 1-3 March.

#71 Ayumu Sasaki
“Today has been a very good day, we have improved a lot from yesterday. I have adapted much better to the track and my feeling on the bike has improved a lot. I have taken some steps forward particularly with my riding style, everything is coming together and I was able to set a good pace and a good lap time. I am very happy with how today has gone and tomorrow we can focus on the lap time, because we know we can be fast on used tyres. For the final day of the test we want to see how quick we can be over a single lap.”

#17 John McPhee
“It was very windy today and that made life difficult. It was hard to test the things we wanted to so we changed the plan a little and focused on tyres. We tried the new front soft and also did a few laps on the hard rear to see how it was all working. In general, the feedback was interesting. We still have some things to try but we have tomorrow. Now we know which combination of tyres works best for me and tomorrow we can push for a good lap time.”
