Ayumu Sasaki’s passion for riding began when he was just 9 years old

when his father Shinya –a former 125cc rider in the 1993 World Championship- took him to a local circuit to try pocket bike racing with his brother. Despite the bikes being only 40cc, Ayumu was hooked.

Under his father’s tutelage, the young Japanese rider began to train and to improve his English, with the MotoGP World Championship in mind. After competing in various national championships in Japan between 2011 and 2013 –with his win in the 2011 All Japan Championship a standout achievement, Ayumu took a step up in 2014.

In his rookie year in the Asia Talent Cup he showed signs of his talent, placing fourth in the series. The next season he was crowned champion, as well as finishing in the Top 3 in the Red Bull Rookies Cup and debuting in the FIM CEV. In 2016 he won the Red Bull Rookies Cup series and came seventh in the Junior World Championship, earning himself a Moto3 World Championship debut as a replacement rider at the Malaysian GP that year.

With the SIC Racing Team, Sasaki moved up to Moto3 full time in 2017. Learning and improving constantly, Ayumu finished 20th overall (32 points) and was crowned Rookie of the Year. In the 2018 season, Sasaki took another step forward and was able to compite for the podium in several races, and also adding two front row starts to his tally.
