Quick Vierge just shy of Misano podium
Season best Moto2 result for Vierge in fourth, Jake Dixon takes 16thPETRONAS Sprinta Racing’s Xavi Vierge improved upon his season-best result at the San Marino GP after crossing the line fourth, which keeps him seventh in the Moto2 championship. Team-mate Jake Dixon battled unexpected issues to finish 16th.
Vierge was hampered by a battle with Marcel Schrotter and Fabio di Giannantonio in the early stages of the race, before he was able to start to pull away from the pair in fourth. Despite setting his fastest laps of the race in the closing stages, the Spaniard was unable to reign in those ahead of him and crossed the line fourth.
Unfortunately, team-mate Dixon wasn’t able to make the predicted progress in the opening laps and found himself down in 16th. The Brit started to make his way through the field, but as the race approached the halfway point Jake found himself slipping backwards into the pack. The PETRONAS Sprinta Racing rider ended the race 16th.
Vierge and Dixon will be back in action at the Misano circuit in only a few days’ time, for the Gran Premio dell’Emilia Romagna e della Riviera di Rimini (18-20 September).
For Xavi this is the best result of the year and I’m so happy: we’ve seen that he is getting closer to the podium with every race. We know what we have to work on, what to improve and we’re doing it. Xavi is constantly improving and this was a great weekend from him. We didn’t have a good grid position at the last two races, so that was our main target this week. We managed to do that and that meant we had the potential to fight at the front. I thought Xavi was a little too careful in the beginning, he could have been more aggressive, but in the end we were very close to the podium. The team and Xavi are always working hard, so we’ll see what happens next week.
It’s been a good weekend for Jake but he’s also had too many ups and downs: some sessions were really good, but it wasn’t a strong race for us - we need to analyse what happened. He had some comments about the brakes, so we need to look into that and make it better for next weekend. I’m sure we can do that and I’m sure it will be a better race for him.
That was the best race of the year so far! We have had a really good weekend. From the previous races we knew that we needed to improve our one-lap pace and we did that here, we started from the second row. Today we wanted to fight for the victory, but I made a mistake in the first lap and nearly had a highside. Then when I was in fourth I tried to push until the last lap to make it onto the podium, unfortunately it wasn’t enough. However I’m really happy with the weekend. Thank you to the team for the great work they’ve done and now we focus on next weekend when we are back at the same track.
Warm Up was good this morning and I was putting in some decent lap times, but then I wasn’t able to replicate that in the race. I’m not sure what the problem was entirely so we need to look into that. The rear of the bike didn’t feel quite right and that was affecting my braking. We didn’t change anything between Warm Up and the race so I don’t understand why that happened. Just feeling a bit disappointed at the moment but we’ll reset and hopefully do better here next weekend.
