Strong start to final round of 2020 for Vierge at Portimão
Xavi Vierge ends opening day of Portuguese GP sixthPETRONAS Sprinta Racing’s Xavi Vierge made a strong start to the Portuguese GP, the final round of the 2020 season. After the two extended 55-minute Free Practice sessions at Algarve International Circuit, Vierge ended the opening day sixth.
Vierge had a good strong start to FP1, immediately setting the fourth fastest lap time in the opening minutes. After taking time to digest the gathered information, Xavi set another series of time attack laps in the closing stages to finish the session ninth with a fastest time of 1min 44.279secs – 0.539secs shy of the top spot.
The sun continued to shine over the Portuguese circuit during FP2, which saw Vierge stay within the top-ten for the majority of the 55-minute session. Using the time to fine-tune the set-up on his Triumph-powered Kalex, it wasn’t until the final moments of FP2 that the Spaniard started his time-attack runs. The best of these, a 1min 43.314secs lap, saw him end the day as the sixth fastest rider – just 0.373secs off the leader in the combined standings.
The Moto2 FP3 session will get underway at 10.55am local time (6.55pm MYT) tomorrow, with Xavi’s final qualifying session of the 2020 season due to start at 3.10pm local time (11.10pm MYT).
It has been an amazing day because Portimão is a track that I know from 2015, but with the new asphalt it is really enjoyable to ride here. The bike has been so good today and the team has done an amazing job, they have worked so hard between Valencia and here to fix the problem that we had in the last few races. We also made some changes between FP1 and FP2 today. With brand new tyres on the bike felt really good and was quick, but also we are quick with the used tyres. The times here are so fast for the first day of action and I think it’s just going to get even quicker tomorrow. With it being a new track the improvements are bigger each day than normal. Tomorrow we will give everything we have to try to go direct to Q2 and then fight to be on the front two rows.
