Successful PETRONAS Sprinta Racing debut for Vierge and Dixon

Moto2 riders Xavi Vierge and Jake Dixon get their 2020 pre-season underway at Jerez

PETRONAS Sprinta Racing riders Xavi Vierge and Jake Dixon have had their first chance to jump on their bikes for the 2020 Moto2 World Championship today, taking to the track in wet conditions at the Circuito de Jerez Angel Nieto and finishing the day first and seventh respectively.

Unfortunately running in rain for his debut, Vierge was still able to make a fast adoption to the new team by completing 66 laps and finishing with a time of 1min 54.161secs. Well off the lap record thanks to the weather conditions and a cold track, Vierge’s time was good enough to leave him in P1, 0.242secs faster than his nearest rivals.

Dixon, making the switch to Kalex machinery for the first time in Moto2, completed 43 laps as the team worked to adjust the bike’s ergonomics to suit him. Finishing with a time of 1min 56.047secs, he ended up 1.886secs from his new team-mate and seventh overall.

The two-day test at Circuito de Jerez Angel Nieto concludes tomorrow with track action from 1000-1800 local time (1700-0100 Malaysian time) before pre-season action stops for the winter break.

Xavi Vierge

“I’m really happy with my first day on the bike because working with the team went so well; already I feel very comfortable with them. The only pity was that it was raining all day, but we were able to try many things and learn how to work together. Everyone is very pleased with how well it has gone so far and we’ve made a good start to 2020. We’re hoping that the weather improves for tomorrow so that we can do some work in dry conditions too.”

Jake Dixon

“The first day with the team was fantastic and I love my guys - and it’s not just them; the whole squad in both Moto2 and Moto3 have been really happy to see me join. It’s such a nice feeling to have a great team like PETRONAS Sprinta Racing welcoming you in. We’ve spent today trying to get the base setting of the bike right - things like handlebar and footpeg position - so that we can understand exactly what I need from it. The initial feeling is really good, even though I struggled a little bit in a few areas. It wasn’t easy to go out for the first time on a cold and wet track, but overall I’m happy with the day. It’s a shame tomorrow looks like it’s going to be wet again, but it’s been a very useful experience.”
