Vierge to start final Moto2 race of 2020 from fifth row
Xavi Vierge to line up 13th for the Portuguese GPXavi Vierge will be starting the Grande Prémio de Portugal, the final round of the 2020 season, from the fifth row of the grid. The PETRONAS Sprinta Racing rider ended the day with the 13th fastest Moto2 time around Algarve International Circuit.
Vierge started the Moto2 FP3 session by setting a time that placed him in the top-ten. The Spaniard didn’t improve upon his time set yesterday until the final moments of the session, but stayed within the Q2 places throughout the 40 minutes. At the end of FP3 Xavi had moved up to eighth, tenth overall, with a 1min 43.283secs time, which secured his place in Q2.
The opening minutes of the Q2 session saw Vierge post a time that put him provisionally on the front row, in second. As other riders continued to improve over the next few minutes, the Spaniard slipped down to just inside the top-ten. Xavi’s final flying lap saw him set personal best times in the opening sectors, however with no slipstream in the final sector the lap was not faster. Vierge will start the final Moto2 race of the 2020 season from 13th on the grid, after setting a fastest lap of 1min 43.030secs.
Xavi will be back on track tomorrow at 9.30am local time (5.30pm MYT), before the 2020 Moto2 season concludes with the 23-lap race at 12.20pm local time (8.20pm MYT).
I’m really happy with my feeling on the bike, but not with the position we end today with. We have had a great weekend, worked a lot on the bike and the feeling is good, but we expected more today. You really need a slipstream in the final sector at this track to go fast. Once I had new tyres on I was fast in the first sectors, but then lost the time in the final sector because I was alone on track. Although it is 13th position today, I am happy because I’m feeling good with the bike and tomorrow should be a good race. There are many places on this track that you can make a mistake over the 23 laps of the race, so we will see what happens. We have a great pace though and I will give everything to finish the season with a great result.
